Kitchen tile murals from your photo or artwork

A mural behind a hob or sink is a splashback and a picture in one (in the US you’d call it a backsplash). The tiles are kiln-fired, so they withstand heat, steam and grease, and wipe clean with normal kitchen cleaner. Measure the gap between the worktop and the wall units and send it with your image. We’ll plan the layout so the main subject isn’t hidden behind the tap or the cooker hood. Kitchens are one of the places we fit tile murals, along with bathrooms and outdoor walls.

What makes a kitchen tile mural different from regular tiles

A kitchen tile mural is one picture spread across a set of ceramic tiles and sized to your wall, so you get a single image instead of a repeat pattern. We make each one to order. We number every tile on the front and send a fitting map with the set, so your tiler can see exactly where each piece goes. Before we print anything, we send you the layout to approve.

Wallpaper murals that look like tiles are made for dry walls. Behind the hob, or behind the stove as a US kitchen backsplash, you need fired ceramic tiles that can take the heat and splashes of a working kitchen. Unlike a mosaic made from small pieces, a printed mural keeps the fine detail of your photo.

Kitchen mural ideas and designs

Most kitchen murals start with something the customer already loves:

  • a photo of a view, a garden or a coastline
  • a painting or drawing you own, or a print you have the rights to
  • fruit, herbs, a bird on a branch and floral designs in bold colours
  • a Mediterranean scene in deep blue and white, or a geometric pattern
  • a retro or contemporary graphic in a style that matches your colour scheme

Fine detail prints well, so photos keep their texture, and paintings keep their brushwork. No image yet? Our free Tile Designer will create a tile design from a few words. For blue and white patterned tiles rather than one picture, have a look at our Delft tiles for a kitchen.

Planning a mural behind the hob, sink or range cooker

Measure the width between the cabinets and the height from the worktop to the wall units or the cooker hood, and note where the sockets and switches are. Send us the sizes with your image, and we’ll lay the picture out so faces and focal points stay clear of the sockets, tap and hob.

Most of our splashback customers go for 20x20cm tiles. A 1m² splashback in 20x20cm tiles takes 25 tiles. We check your photo’s resolution against the mural size before we quote, so you know it will print sharply. Behind a range cooker or an Aga, the mural can run higher, and our guide to tiles behind an Aga cooker has more ideas.

A mural works best as the room’s main focal point. White cabinets, a plain counter, stainless steel appliances and plain subway tiles around the panel let the picture stand out. Pick a grout colour and a paint colour for the rest of the wall that suit the design. We can frame the panel with a border and cut plain wall tiles so it meets the edges of the wall.

Heat, steam and cleaning

We print your picture as a ceramic decal, apply it to each tile by hand, and kiln-fire it at 900°C, so the pigments fuse into the glaze. Heat from the hob, steam from the kettle and grease from the pan won’t affect it, and once it’s up, it wipes clean with the same cleaner you use on the rest of the kitchen. The colour comes with our 50-year UV guarantee. Choose a gloss or satin matt finish.

Kitchen tile mural prices

Kitchen murals are priced by the square metre, from £423 per m² inc VAT (£352.50 + VAT), and the printing is included in that. If the order comes to less than £120 inc VAT (£100 + VAT), we add a £36 inc VAT (£30 + VAT) setup charge. Not sure how your photo will look? Order a sample tile for £12 inc VAT (£10 + VAT), and we’ll knock it off the mural price when you go ahead. Most murals are made within 1 to 3 weeks of you approving the layout, and we ship across the UK and worldwide.

Kitchen tile mural questions

Can a mural go behind a cooker?

Yes. The tiles are kiln-fired, so the heat behind a hob or range cooker won’t affect the print.

Are murals hard to clean?

No. The design is part of the glaze, so you clean it just like any other tile backsplash or splashback.

Can I fit a kitchen mural myself?

Yes, if you’re used to tiling. The tiles are numbered on the front and come with a fitting map, and you can install them with normal adhesive and grout. Keep the joints narrow and pick a grout colour that suits the design, so the picture reads as one image.

Do you make bathroom murals too?

Yes. Fired tiles are waterproof, so a mural can go in a shower. See our bathroom murals.
