Custom Delft tiles with your own design

Send us a photo or a sketch, and we’ll turn it into a Delft style tile: your house, your dog, a church, a boat with its name, a family crest or a date. We draw the design in Delft blue on white, print it as a ceramic decal and kiln-fire it at 900°C in Somerset, so the tile lasts as long as any other tile on the wall. Personalised tiles sit alongside the classic motifs in our Delft tiles range.

What you can put on a custom Delft tile

  • Your home: a house, a cottage or a street, drawn as a small Delft scene.
  • Pets and wildlife: a dog, a cat, a horse or a garden bird, framed like a traditional tile.
  • Places and boats: a church, a coastal view, a sailing boat with its name, maritime scenes or a landscape you know.
  • Names and dates: a family crest, a house name or a date, in lettering that suits the style.

Mix your own tiles with classic Delft designs and Dutch motifs, such as a windmill, ships, tulips, daffodils and other florals, or with the ox head, spider and fleur-de-lis corner motifs that link Delft tiles across a wall. You could have a single bespoke tile among classic scenes, or a whole Delft wall of your own.

How a custom Delft tile is made

Blue and white tile panel of a Gothic building
  1. Send your photo or sketch, and tell us the tile size and how many tiles you have in mind.
  2. We prepare the Delft design. If your photo or sketch needs it, we redesign it in the Delft style free of charge, then send you a visual to approve.
  3. Order a sample if you want one. A sample tile is £12 inc VAT (£10 + VAT), and we refund it against your order.
  4. We print and fire. We print the design as a ceramic decal, apply it to each tile by hand and kiln-fire it at 900°C, so the cobalt blue fuses into the glaze.
  5. Delivery. Most orders are made in 1 to 3 weeks. Tiles for a panel or mural are numbered on the front and come with a fitting map.

Delft blue and other colours

Blue and white tiles with single flower, bird and ship motifs

Cobalt blue on white is the classic Delft colour, the blue and white Dutch potters took from Chinese porcelain in the 17th century. Delftware has been made in the Netherlands for almost 400 years, and historic tiles also came in manganese purple and in polychrome, with several colours on one tile. We can also make custom Delft designs in green, manganese purple or polychrome.

Our 13x13cm rustic handmade finish ceramic tile gives Delft style tiles the softer, more traditional look of old Dutch Delft. Flat porcelain gives crisper lines and suits a modern room.

Custom Delft tile questions

Can you add a name or a date?

Yes. Fine detail prints well, so a house name, a boat’s name or a date stays sharp on a 13x13cm tile.

What are Delft style tiles made of?

Traditional Delft tiles are tin-glazed earthenware. Ours are new ceramic or porcelain tiles, with the design printed in ceramic pigments and kiln-fired into the glaze.

How long does a personalised Delft tile take?

Most orders are made in 1 to 3 weeks after you approve the design.

Can I mix my own design with classic Delft designs?

Yes. You can personalise one tile among classic scenes, or create a whole panel of your own. We’ll plan the layout and number each tile, so it goes up in the right order.
